20 City Running/Walking Safety Tips

Now that we live in Pasig City I am running all over the country to and from places like Makati, Quezon City, Paranaque and even old Manila.
When you have new and different routes to run it presents a lot of new challenges in terms of safety and running enjoyment.

It does not matter what country you are running in you need to think and plan ahead before putting on your favorite pair of shoes and hitting the street.

Here are my Top 20 Tips on Running Safety in No Order of Importance

1. When night running in the Philippines:

(a) Wear bright clothing so people notice you more and call out “Hey Joe” (most white people are called Joe in the Philippines – haha); (b) Carry small weights so you have something nice to give if being held up (never argue or fight with anyone as you do not know who and where their friends are); (c) Do some Coconut oil pulling for a fresher and cleaner mouth.

Running Safety tips1

2. Beware of the Dog:

Even the small dogs because their bark can really startle you and pump you full of cortisol. More dangerous of course are the bigger dogs so I simply cross to the other side of the street or ensure someone who is tastier is between me and them!

Beware of the dog1

3. Beware of the Person:

Generally you should trust no one and if seeing any one slightly suspicious treat them like you would a rabid dog. Cross the street, turn around or run away flat out. In Australia I have run with sand in my pocket and would use that as a first line of defense before running if attacked. It happens, so it is best not be naive and to be on guard. The picture below was taken at midday in Adelaide, Australia when an obviously drug affected guy walked past us. I put myself between him and my darlings and was super alert.

L&C

Ensure you take out an ear plugs if sensing danger and never wear earplugs if not absolutely certain of the safety of your surroundings.

Wooden Spoon is a Must Visit at Kapitolyo & Rockwell

I am glad that I have been well served in Wooden Spoon and also positively impacted one of their staff and the staff members family.

Wooden Spoon Arnold

“I first met Arnold from Wooden Spoon in Rockwell late last year while he was buying asthma meds for his daughter Hannah.

I explained the Primed way of reversing it and Hannah is now asthma free. After spending tens of thousands on meds they no longer need to. Hannah can now thrive as all children deserve to. That’s Primed.”

#livelongerlivebetter #primednutritionfeedsyourbrain #primedreversesasthma

Having just moved into the Pasig area late in 2015 we went searching for a nice restaurant in the area. It was past 2:30pm and most had closed their doors already. Luckily I phoned a friend in the area and he recommended Wooden Spoon in Kapitolyo. Great suggestion Primed Mike Yau. Thanks.

Wooden Spoon2

Wooden Spoon has a branch at Rockwell (besides Kapitolyo) and to my regret we never tried it as a family despite having lived there for 2 years.

Wooden Spoon1

We did not like our food at Wooden Spoon. We all LOVED it. Excellent Filipino cuisine easily made Primed or Primed already.

Doing an Ironman Primed/Fat Adapted Compared to a Non-Primed Ironman

There is no such thing as an easy Ironman event. 3.8km swim, a 180km bike and then a 42.2km run is tough no matter how fit you are. There is wear and tear on your body before, during and after the event. It takes many hours of training and discipline to be able to complete one so you can say “I am an Ironman.” However, what if you train too much and do more harm than good?

What if you could achieve Ironman status with less wear and tear on your body, have faster recovery after training sessions and the event itself, be able to spend more time with your family and friends (as opposed to gaining what could be “junk” miles pounding the pavement), have less chance of injury and still have a better body (lighter and stronger) and sharper mind?

I have completed Japan Ironman (14:07:55) with the standard lots of hours training (20/week) and supposedly healthy diet (grains) and I have completed Malaysia Ironman (14:03:55) with less training hours (just 9/week) and a Primed Lifestyle (no grains/sugars etc.). I also weighed 10kg less and had more energy this way.

This post is to compare the two Ironman events in which one was Primed (Malaysia) and the other non-Primed (Japan).

Just as another comparison, I also completed Melbourne Ironman after Japan Ironman with 18 hours training a week and leading the Primed Lifestyle in 11:41:23. An improvement of 2 hours and 20 minutes in around 6 months.

Ironman20

Primed Food Compared with Non-Primed Food

Prior to Japan Ironman I was eating the SAD way. SAD is an acronym for Standard Australian Diet where we eats lots of carbs and sugar and think it’s healthy (the Government and dietitians actually recommend this which is why we are one of the most obese countries in the world). I was exercising 20 hours a week, was more susceptible to injury, was often very tired and was 73 kilos.
