What Motivates You To Perform?

Tri Friendly Rivalries

Our motivation to race in triathlons is because we enjoy competing, having fun and meeting great new friends. Sometimes those friends started as rivals: friendly rivals, but rivals non-the-less. It is fun to be a little competitive as we would all rather finish one spot higher if we could (unless you came first).

One of my friendly rivals is Jualyn. We have been friends since our running days and have run many races together such as Quezon City Marathon, Condura Marathon and a few Milo Marathons.

I had not beaten Jualyn in triathlons since he did his very first triathlon at Tri-United 1 way back on March 10th, 2013. He had beaten me in at least 4 triathlons since then and was getting a bit cocky. One of our last races was Tri-United 1 in March 2014, and he beat me then by 1 minute and 52 seconds.

I recently beat Jualyn by 1 minute and 14 seconds at SubiT triathlon on April 27th, 2014. My time was 2:31:03 and Jualyn’s 2:32:17.

• Chad Davis – Hey Jualyn, How are you mate? Having sleepless nights thinking about how I beat you by 1 minute and 14 seconds? It is nice to get you back after you beat me in every triathlon we did together since Tri-U 1 in March 2013. Haha. I am enjoying this very much. See you for some training soon my friend.

Another Friendly Rival, RJ Lorenzo

My other friendly rival is RJ Lorenzo. I still remember the 23rd of June, 2013 when I beat him at the 5150 standard distance triathlon and he was telling me that he couldn’t believe it! At first I did not know who he was but when I saw the RJ on his race bib I knew it was the RJ who had always previously beaten me!

Since April 2013 RJ and I have raced 6 times with us winning 3 times each and a difference of just 17 seconds combined after almost 20 hours of racing! Who is the better triathlete? RJ was 17 seconds faster over the 6 triathlons but I won the last race in March 2014 so I am the better triathlete in my humble opinion. For now!

Amazing Co-incidence

Here is a cool and amazing co-incidence. In 2 triathlon races (Tri-United 1 and Melbourne Ironman) Natasha and Weng have raced over 277km for a combined time of exactly 18:33:21 each. Great racing ladies!

So, who is your friendly rival? Do they motivate you to keep training and inspire you to do your best. Competition is healthy and should be fun. Good luck to Jualyn and RJ Lorenzo, but not too much.

BANANA PANCAKES

The word pancake is sure to make a child smile. It conjures images of Sunday morning breakfast with maple syrup.

We have put a healthy twist to the modern day pancake by using almond “flour” (simply ground almonds) as an alternative to the highly processed white flour used in most households.

This is a delicious dish for breakfast or a snack. Maple syrup is not even necessary as there is an element of sweetness from the bananas as well as a crunchy texture from the almond flour.

CHAD’S PRIMED JOURNEY

2013 Exercise and Weight

For the year 2013 I did the following exercise which totaled over 11,000 kilometers: Swimming 302km;Biking 6593km; and Running 4163km.

Despite all this exercise (some would say chronic cardio), giving up beers for many, many months prior to Ironman Japan on August 31st 2013, and being careful with what I ate, I still had love handles and put on an extra 2 to 3 kilos over the Christmas break despite still exercising and being conscious of what I ate.

During 2013 my weight hovered from around 70 to 73 kilos. I ran an average of 80km per week, biked an average of 127km per week, and swam an average of 7.5km per week. I also went to the gym regularly and was conscious of eating “healthily”. My weight was not too high but I had definite excess weight around my waist that I could not get rid of no matter how much exercise I did.

What if I were to get injured, went on work trips, or just didn’t care to train so much? I would gain weight right? You can clearly see that I could not exercise away my bad diet.

SUBIC BAY INTERNATIONAL TRIATHLON RACE REPORT

Sunday April 27th 2014

1.5km swim/40km bike/10km run

Pre-Race
This was the first triathlon race for Natasha and I since our Melbourne Ironman adventure just 33 days earlier. My training for the run and swim were good but I had not used my tri-bike since the 180km along Melbourne’s smooth roads. I had biked just once on my road bike for the Clark duathlon 2 weeks earlier. Despite a lack of kilometres riding on the bike I felt fresh, knew I was strong and light (62.2 kg) so I was confident I could still bike ok. Despite exercising less (and eating more) my weight was the lowest it had been for 20 years.

BROCCOLI & CAULIFLOWER “RICE”

Broccoli and Cauliflower "Rice"

Firstly, let me confess, I loved rice. Especially white and fluffy, it goes well with so many dishes. I had been eating rice my whole life, especially as a boy when I lived in Singapore and Hong Kong, and even for the last 13 years whilst living and working in Manila.
However, with my new Primed Lifestyle, rice (and all grains), are out of my meal plan so I wanted to find a more nutrient dense alternative.
There is nothing fundamentally unhealthy about rice other than that it is a high glucose, high energy food that is meant to fuel active humans. Even as a triathlete who exercises very often, I now prefer my new, healthier alternatives and have found my performances improving.
