Filipino Fried Rice – The Primed Version for Longer Life

I LOVE a great Fried Rice. With the right Primed ingredients it can be a meal in itself and something that powers your body and mind all day.

However, with the wrong ingredients and cooked using vegetable oil it will spike your blood sugar levels (and therefore insulin) and can have severe adverse health consequences.

Dr. Cate Shanahan (chief nutritional doctor of the L.A.Lakers and respected author of Deep Nutrition) surveyed hundreds of patients in New Zealand that were admitted to the hospital for a heart attack, and discovered that every single patient that just had a heart attack had consumed foods made with vegetable oils with their last meal before the heart attack…Scary huh! Information from this site.

Filipino Fried Rice1

How about a healthy and nutritious Primed Filipino Fried Rice? One that you can add your own twist to by including local vegetables that suit your budget. Vegetables like Malunggay, Okra and Kangkong can all be used in this dish besides the ones mentioned. Imagine the nutritional value of this version with your Pork or Chicken instead of just plain white rice? Here, you are giving your mind and body high performance fuel.

The best way to cheer yourself up is to try to cheer somebody else up. ~ Mark Twain

We all feel depressed or down some times. Life can be tough and things do not always go the way we hoped they would. As our triathlon champ Jong Sajulga says “C’est la vie” which means “That’s life”.

Primed Scotch Egg with Pickled Cucumber and Ginger on Squash “Rice”

I am always trying to come up with some new cool dishes for my children to enjoy for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Well, here is an item that is nutritious, inexpensive, tasty and good for any meal time. It is the traditional Scotch Egg where a layer of meat is wrapped around a boiled egg then pan fried.  Sounds good right?  It is a traditional British recipe that is making a comeback as people look more and more for real food items like their Grandparents used to eat.

How a Simple Lifestyle Change Helped Reduce my PCOS (PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome) Condition: A True Story

By: Mae Ilagan from WhenInManila

Early this month, I thought I was sick because of severe bleeding. I’ve been diagnosed with Polycystic ovaries (PCOS) for 10 yrs and despite taking hormone pills prescribed by my doctor to fix my imbalances, my condition never really improved. I gave up on my medications 4 years ago, I didn’t want to take any medicine for they were also expensive. And so for 4 yrs, I’d only have my period 3 times yearly….

My 1st period came March 2014 then the 2nd came around August… 2 weeks after I significantly reduced my white sugar and rice consumption (also no grains and no noodles) as advised by Primed for Your Life Wellness Coach, Chad Davis.

Over-fed and under-nourished7

Then Sept 5 came, I noticed I started having blood discharges. I thought it would last for only a few days, but it never stopped til early Oct. By the 1st weekend of October, the blood flow became severe, that I had to go to the hospital as I thought my bleedings were caused by abnormal growths in my uterus since I never visited my doctor for years.

My OB performed an ultrasound and confirmed that I was actually having a normal period. She was so surprised because I never took any meds and because I had my period again only after a month. She confirmed that it was due to my lifestyle/diet change. She (my doctor) even gave me a go signal to continue on with whatever I was doing and even asked me what I did, so she can also advise her other patients who have PCOS to do what I did! The ultrasound results were very good! I have no cysts nor polyps or any abnormalities. Turns out I’m healthier than ever!

Since I lack exercise, my weight loss is very gradual. I almost gave up and wanted to eat rice again, but little did I know that my lifestyle change was doing major changes in my system! I’m so happy now and I feel much healthier as I never thought my imbalances would improve!

I really thank you, Ms. Cathy and the whole Nurture team because you and Chad Davis were the reasons behind my health success!

Thank you for teaching me how to eat well and for adding years to my life!

Malunggay “Miracle Tea” from the “Miracle Tree”

I am a big fan of malunggay. It is inexpensive, nutritious and tastes great in dishes like Omelette with Berries or Tomatoes, Vegetable Sheets Lasagne, Tuna Patties with Squash and in a Primed Fruit Smoothie.

Malunggay Tea_Primed_for_your_life

Malunggay should be known as the rich man’s vegetable due to the huge list of health benefits such as it can help reduce cholesterol and triglycerides, CONTROL BLOOD SUGAR, and offer anti-aging and anti-inflammatory substances, many of which have anti-cancer properties. No wonder the Moringa/Malunggay Tree is known as the Miracle Tree.

Well, as we know it is great in food but maybe even better as a tea. There is significantly higher nutritional value in the malunggay dried leaf, in some cases over ten times in specific nutrients when compared to fresh Malunggay leaf.

Malunggay tea is Primed1

It is very easy to dry out your malunggay leaves and make your Malunggay Tea. Simply pick your malunggay leaves off their stems and spread them over a large tray. We use our pizza trays. Let it dry out over 4 days. Occasionally stir it with a spoon so it dries out evenly. Talking lovingly to your malunggay leaves also adds to the nutrient density of your Malunggay Tea!

After your 4 days you can then place in a very low heated oven for 10 minutes to get any remaining moisture out of the leaves. Then simply place in a sealed container and you are ready to start making your delicious and nutritious Malunggay Tea.

Lets Make Malunggay Tea

Once you have your dried Malunggay leaves it is very easy to make tea.

Simply spoon a table spoon of your Malunggay leaves into a cup of hot water and allow to sit for 10 minutes. Once the color and nutrients have been absorbed into your water simply remove the leaves and sit back and enjoy your tea in the knowledge that it is helping your body in a plethora of ways.  A strainer also makes this process easier.

Flavored Malunggay Tea

You can add additional flavor to your tea by squeezing in lemon or calamansi juice.  We freeze some lemons and oranges and grate in the fruit to our cup.

You can add a dash of honey to your plain Malunggay Tea or your Citrus enhanced Malunggay Tea.

Iced Malunggay Tea

Our family loves a nice cold Malunggay Iced Tea in the heat of the Philippines summer (11 months of the year) and simply make the above tea concoctions in larger quantities then add ice or place in the fridge to get cool.

Turmeric Honey Lemon Iced Tea

You can play around with many varieties of fruits and spices to create a Malunggay Iced Tea to suit your taste. I like to add a tea spoon of Turmeric, squeeze of Lemon and Dash of Honey to my jug of Malunggay Iced Tea.

Malunggay Tea with Turmeric and Honey

The health benefits of Turmeric include reducing inflammation in the body naturally. Turmeric can also be used a preventative measure against diseases like Alzheimer’s, Cancer and Arthritis as evidenced by what Dr. Andrew Weil shares below:

Reviewing some 700 studies, Duke concluded that turmeric appears to outperform many pharmaceuticals in its effects against several chronic, debilitating diseases, and does so with virtually no adverse side effects.

What’s for Lunch? The Primed Lunch Box Revealed

We all want to fuel ourselves and our loved ones OPTIMALLY for school or work.  Ideally we want to have high quality food and drinks to give us the energy so as to concentrate, learn, be creative and still maintain a positive mood.

In these hectic times it is not always easy to achieve this goal and we search for cheap and convenient ways to save ourselves time.  Unfortunately cheap and easy can have negative health consequences (obesity, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, hyper-tension, Alzheimer’s etc.) so it is important to plan and cook ahead of time.

Here are our typical Primed family lunch boxes that provide great fuel for our brains and bodies, fill us up very well, are tasty and don’t spike our blood sugars.

Jong Saljulga – A True Ironman Champ

I asked in my post before the Malaysian Ironman in Langkawi regarding the importance of race nutrition “Who will perform the strongest of the 127 Filipino strong contingent? For some that just might be 9:59:59 seconds.”

Well, meet Jong Sajulga, a true Filipino champion who finished first with a time of 10:17:32 among all the Filipino contingent, 5th in his age category of 30 to 34 (just missing a Kona slot by 6 minutes) and 22nd male overall including a strong pro field.  A great effort in just his 2nd Ironman!

Jong_Sajulga_Primed

Jong’s previous best time in a Full Ironman distance event was 10:28:36, which he did last March 2014 at Melbourne Ironman, Australia.

When I chatted to Jong the day before the Ironman he said he was hoping for the following splits: – Swim 1:10:00 (he swam it in 1:06:58) – Bike 5:30:00 (he biked it in 5:27:16) – Run 3:30:00 (he ran it in 3:35:33) – Total time of 10:17:32.
