Chad’s Melbourne Ironman: Swam, Biked & Ran on Fat

I just completed my 2nd Melbourne Ironman in a ketogenic state by consuming Primed low carbohydrate, high fat, moderate protein (LCHF) foods. This means I was burning my fat as fuel as opposed to glucose/sugar.

MIM 2015 fat vs sugar

By being able to use my fat stores I was able to access 40,000 plus calories for energy. A glucose burner is limited to around 2,000 or so before they must replenish. The sugar burner then uses energy for digesting the food and as some of my Filipino buddies realized this can also lead to very unpleasant stomach issues. There were a lot of people in the medics tent after the Ironman suffering from Gastro Intestinal Distress.

It is a myth that the body and brains preferred fuel source is glucose and can only run on glucose.

Chad’s Melbourne Ironman Tips

With our triathlon friends off to do Taiwan Ironman this coming April 12th I want to give some tips that will hopefully make their Ironman event more successful. Thanks so much to Miguel Feuermann and Sid Maderazo for their great inputs already.

1. Wear your bib at the front during your run for photos and so the crowd can shout out your name

The Melbourne supporters and volunteers were AMAZING. They are very knowledgeable with respect to all sporting events (they say Melbourne is the sporting capital of Australia) and love to give encouragement.

The supporters look at your name on your bib and then say things like “You are doing great Chad, keep it up.” Or, “Great pace Chad, you’re going to be an Ironman.” It is really uplifting and spurs you on. You don’t want to stop and walk after they pump you up, so you keep running!

MIM2015 red carpet

The support of the crowd along the finisher’s red carpet was incredible. Sid Mazerazo said it gave him goosebumps and I also experienced that. It was worth all the pain for that amazing feeling.

So, make sure the supporters can read your name and that you can have your number seen for your photographs.

5 Reasons to Challenge Yourself at Challenge Philippines Triathlon Races

Challenge Philippines was never really on my radar of races to do because the bike is super tough and I am not a good biker. Makes sense in terms of doing races that suit your strengths but I now do races simply for fun and to challenge myself.

Challenge Philippines logo

I first heard about the Challenge races by listening to the famous triathlete Sister Madonna. She said she loves the atmosphere of the Challenge races which convinced me to give Challenge Philippines at Subic Bay on February 22nd a try. I am so glad I listened to you Sister Madonna as I loved it.

Sister Madonna Buder, a nun from Spokane/Washington, US, 83 years “young”, was the oldest participant in DATEV Challenge Roth, June 2014. Article from here. What do you want to do at 80? I will still be doing triathlons with my wife.

Elite Athletes are Saying Hi Fat Bye Carbs

Say Hi To Good Saturated Fats and Bye To Cheap Processed Carbs for better performance in your Sport, Work and Life

Cheap processed carbs can be extremely harmful for your body but complex carbohydrates are an excellent source of nutrition.

Saturated fats like Coconut Oil are an ideal fuel for your mind and body.  Remember, your brain is 60% fat and mother’s milk is 50% fat.

Nutrition for an Ironman – The Most Important Discipline

Who will perform the strongest of the 127 Filipino strong contingent in Langkawi for the Malaysian Ironman? All 127 want to perform well, have fun and do their best possible time. For some that just might be 9:59:59 seconds. For others a mere one second before the cut-off time of 17 hours will be a wonderful achievement.

No matter how strong all the competing athletes are, if they do not have a good pre-race and during-race nutrition plan then their race will be adversely affected some how. Without a good nutrition plan then all the hours of dedicated training might be compromised.

Cocktails – Orgasm or Primed “O” Gel?

I used to love a good Orgasm cocktail. I still do as a matter of fact. As a bartender at University since I was a teenager I made many Orgasm cocktails. There are many different recipes but the traditional one has layers of Kahlua, Baileys and then Cointreau.

The Best Energy Gel in the World is Home-made

If you have excellent nutrition that truly fuels your body optimally every day then you don’t need to use gels very often. With good nutrition you don’t really need them for short distance events but might use them for a long-distance running races or triathlons to give you a boost along when feeling tired. It is best to use real foods to fuel your performance such as bananas, nuts, beef jerky and dried fruits.

There is definitely a time and place for energy gels so why not save some money and make your own?

Here is a simple to prepare home-made energy gel that is relatively inexpensive, full of Primed ingredients that will give you a boost but wont give you the roller-coaster ride of energy fluctuations common with some sugar laden “energy” gels that can have as many as 24 ingredients (including fructose and chemical preservatives).
