There is a lot of addiction in the world today. A lot of people are addicted to a lot of different things. Just to name a few of the more self-destructive ones (and destructive to ones friends and family) are: alcohol, drugs, gambling, sex, pornography, smoking, surfing the internet, texting, watching TV, eating fast foods, using facebook and sugar.
Sugar
I include sugar because we all know that the world currently is experiencing an obesity epidemic. Not just here in the Philippines (with high numbers of diabetes, people with heart conditions and other illnesses) but in the U.S., Australia and many other countries. Of course, our more sedentary lifestyle is a contributing factor but sugar is being consumed more and more and is a significant contributing factor to this obesity. It is used in a lot of packaged and processed foods.
Do you love sugar too much? Could you give it up?
Many institutions use CAGE Criteria for assessing alcoholism where “CAGE” is an acronym for the following:
C – Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?
A – Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
G – Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking?
E – Eye opener: Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?
Ask yourself these questions with your use of the internet (or using your cell phone), gambling, having sugary foods and drinks or any of the issues mentioned above.
Self-Reflection
Perhaps it is time for self-reflection on this. Especially seeing tomorrow is the first day of the second half of the year. It is an opportune time to assess yourself and your habits that might not be constructive and positive.
I asked myself that question with respect to wine and answered yes to 3 of those questions. Well, I gave up beer and spirits in February 2014, along with sugar and grains as part of my Primed Lifestyle, so why not wine?
So, today I will definitely limit my wine consumption to a maximum of one day per week. I will still be tasting wine as part of my job when conducting wine seminars and when doing reviews, but only once a week if part of a nice dining experience with friends.
I will even post a picture and email it to becauseisaidiwould to seal the resolution.
I want to run marathons and compete in Ironman events at 90 (What do you want to do at 90?). I want to play sports and run after my future grandchildren. I want to live long and be healthy (5 Tips on How To Live To 100 will be a post in July). This resolution won’t hurt that endeavor as I am still young and have so much more I want to do and achieve.
So, is there anything you love too much? If so, maybe it is time to act. Good luck. Feel free to email me at chad.davis.1@gmail.com if you wish to share privately or please leave a comment so others can benefit from your bravery.
