Which famous people have you met whilst on your daily run?
On June the 2nd I was out running with my family on a beautifully sunny Monday morning in Roma. We did not know that it was the Italian National Day (Festa della Republica) and therefore a public holiday as well.
We were running along nicely when we saw a large crowd gathering outside the striking Altare della Patria (known as Altar of the Fatherhood and The Vittoriana). Being curious people we stopped to have a look and see what the fuss was about.
It turned out that Italy’s youngest Prime Minister Matteo Renzi was to be in attendance of the start of the day long ceremony (along with the Italian President). I was lucky enough to shake his hand and wish his team good luck for the upcoming Football World Cup.
The whole event was being televised live and an enthusiastic reporter came up to me afterwards with his camera rolling. He asked me some long question in Italian to which I could only reply “Sorry, but I do not speak Italian.”
He gave me a withering look of disappointment and quickly went on his way.
The next day we went to visit the Vatican to see the Pope.
